Ready to write with more ease and joy?
Writing group opening, upcoming classes, and new publications!
Hello, friends. I hope your summer is off to a good start, that there are cold beverages and good books close at hand. If one of your summer goals is to write more, read on!
There is an opening in one of my ongoing writing groups!
Do you crave deadlines? Community? A space to have your work read and reacted to? To talk craft and learn techniques to strengthen your stories? Then you need a writing group!
One of my writing groups is actively seeking a new member. We meet 1 Friday per month, from 12-2pm, in downtown Chapel Hill. You can read all about my approach to writing groups here. If you’re interested, hit reply and let me know!
One-day classes on flash fiction (June 29) and memoir (July 20)
I’m teaching 2 separate Saturday afternoon workshops at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro, one on flash fiction, one on memoir. In each class, we’ll discuss examples of the form, write to prompts, and have a great time. There is always financial aid available for my offerings—for more information, contact Rachel Pottern Nunn.
Live storytelling starts in September
If you’re itching to tell your story with your own voice, in real time, keep an eye out—live storytelling returns in September and I’ll send the link when registration officially opens.
Conversations on craft and creative community for all
No matter where you live, you can hear my thoughts on craft on my podcast, Writing in the Dark, where Ralph Walker and I have talked about goal setting, generating ideas, messy first drafts, character development, setting, and scene. And for a deeper dive on how to build complex characters that drive plot, check out this lecture I did for Symposium, an online education resource for creators.
New publications
I have two new pieces of writing out in the world. They couldn’t be more different.
One’s a little ditty entitled Carolina Calling, on how I came to call North Carolina my home (and a little bit about my writing journey too).
The other, Chest Freezer, is a piece of flash fiction about a certain kind of terror. If you have been following along since last summer, you will read this piece and wonder if I wrote it after this happened. I didn’t—I wrote it a year earlier. I’m still digesting what that signifies (if anything).
Thanks, as always, for reading 💜
Chest Freezer. Wow...particularly since it was a year before "this happened."Someday want to know how you got out of the freezer, but that may take time.
Congrats on the publications! Love the way Chest Freezer turned out 😍
