Bloom: March 2018
March Workshop: Reading & Writing
I hope your writing is blooming along with the trees and daffodils. If you're ready to come out of hibernation, join me on March 22 for Reading & Writing, where you'l have the opportunity to read your work aloud (if you choose) and get some new writing started with the help of prompts. If you want to share, bring 1 to 3 pages. Shared writing will not be critiqued; this is simply an opportunity to hear your own work aloud, which is pretty exciting and inspiring.
Date & time: Thursday, March 22, 2018, 6:30-8:30pm
Location: The Mothership, 401 W Geer St, Durham.
Cost: $10-$20, sliding scale.
Reading by Ada Limón
If you're up for a field trip, Ada Limón (one of my favorite poets!) is reading at Guilford College in Greensboro on March 21. Details here. You can read three of her poems here.
Books to Read
I'm reading Carmen Maria Machado's Her Body and Other Parties, a collection of beautifully written, strange, and subversive short stories--definitely one to check it out. And speaking of well-written stories about women, there's Man and Wife by Katie Chase, who can really write a sentence.
The brilliant Marilynne Robinson is out with a new book of essays, What Are We Doing Here?, which I'm very much looking forward to reading. If you're not familiar with her work, start with the breathtaking Housekeeping. Looking for another lady genius? Grace Paley. She knew how to write a short story. As did Ann Beattie. If you haven't read either, any collection of their short stories will more than impress you.
To Go Poem
Before you head off into your day,
read this poem by local poet Tyree Daye from his book, River Hymns:
