Amplifying underrepresented voices
Free storytelling class returns to the Carrboro ArtsCenter April 2
As some of you know, I run a live storytelling series in Carrboro, North Carolina, called Story Connection. Through classes, performances, and meetups, Story Connection aims to help folks find their unique voice and create community.
Three years ago, Story Connection began with a free class for underrepresented voices, thanks to a grant from the Orange County Arts Commission.
From the very beginning, the mission of Story Connection has been to elevate voices that have been silenced and share their stories with a broader community.
I am beyond thrilled that this offering returns to the Carrboro ArtsCenter for a third time this spring.
Class starts April 2. Registration is now open. Read on for all the details.
What do you mean by underrepresented?
Underrepresented is a purposefully broad term. It can mean people of color, queer folks, and disabled people. It includes immigrants and Indigenous voices. What it really means is anyone who has explicitly or implicitly been told they are less than because of their identity.
How do I get into this class?
There is no gatekeeping or box checking. You don’t have to prove you belong. If this offering calls to you, go ahead and register.
Do I have to tell a story about my identity?
Absolutely not. Nobody will be required to tell an identity-based story. As in every other class, students will get prompts and encouragement to develop the stories they want to tell.
This offering isn’t for me, but I’d like to support it. Is there something else I can do?
Yes, yes, and yes! There are two things you can do that would really help.
1) Forward this email to people in your community, regardless of their identity. The more we spread the word, the more voices we can amplify and witness.
2) Donate. Grant funding alone does not cover all the expenses of Story Connection, which include podcast production and performance costs. Aside from this free class, financial aid is always available, made possible by donations from generous humans like you.
Whatever you can donate helps. Please give today.
Listen to stories from previous classes
Some phenomenal stories have come out of these free classes. Check out episodes 1, 2, 3, and 12 of the podcast to hear some.
Learn more about Story Connection and underrepresented voices
I was recently featured on The Carrborean Radio Hour, discussing Story Connection’s origins and how the free class has evolved. This episode also includes a searing story from Sally Scherer-Pinsley you must listen to.
Full moon circle with Dominique Daye Hunter
Afro-Indigenous storyteller and poet (and Story Connection alum!) Dominique Daye Hunter leads a monthly full moon circle open to all writers and storytellers who want to journal, reflect, and transform beneath the glow of the full moon. Sign up for the April gathering here.
I can’t wait to hear your story
While others across the country fight to suppress and eliminate the voices that represent the rich breadth of what it means to be a human, I will continue to work hard to elevate those voices. Thank you for your support.
