Between the cold and the caucus, I’ve been thinking about Iowa a lot lately. I lived there for five years, from when I was 25 to 30. It was a pretty magical time in my life for a number of reasons and also it was very cold. In the winter I went out in long underwear, a giant coat I called my jacket-blanket, wool socks, and of course hat, gloves, and scarf.
This week, friends from the Midwest have sent photos of snow and thermometers, which has made me nostalgic. Realistically, after so many years in NC, I’d probably keel over in true Midwestern cold. But dang, the snow and ice can be so beautiful.
Even the news about the caucus, which ranges from silly to infuriating, makes me fondly recall the coffee bean caucus at the Hamburg Inn as well as the pie shakes.
