A retreat like that, where nobody speaks, sounds like a dream! 😂

Soul rest, yes, please. ♥️

My issue is that I spend too much time trying to market rather than write. I get so bent out of shape worrying about what might work that I lose sight of the whole purpose of writing for me which is to simply write. I’m now going through a conscious shift to free up more time to do just that. And I may have to put my phone in a drawer!

The ever-present conundrum in late stage capitalist decline: to create or to sell. Le sigh!

I'm glad you're making an effort to put more time to the making. Wishing you luck 💜

I love the illustration, the Writer's Clock. Is this a Julia F. Green original?

I wish I could take credit. I saw something like this at a writing retreat in VA and then continued with google...

"I didn't know how much my soul needed it," - Indeed. I did a week long writing retreat in January with Anne and it was so, so juicy for me. Definitely calendaring is also a more regular help. I'm actually scheduling my time for #1000WordsofSummer and I'm eager to see how that works! Thanks for this piece, Julia.

thank you! I’ve learned I’m not a deadline person but I know how competitive I am so I wanted to try it!

There a dozen things I want to agree with enthusiastically, but I don't want this comment to get too long. Retreats are essential! Schedule your writing and set a timer! Put down the phone! Ignore your to-do list! I deleted Instagram and Facebook and some games from my phone a couple weeks ago and I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my hands half the time, but it's getting more natural to reach for a notebook in those moments, and my focus is getting so much better - not to mention my mood, all of which helps me write more and write better.

I'm always running long, so don't sweat that :)

I love to hear that some of this resonated with you--and yes to deleting social media from phones! Reaching for a notebook--great instinct. I have a bunch of rocks around my house I hold while staring out the window. Never said I wasn't weird 😂

Julia:

Thank you.

For me, I know writing is a daily art in my life.

I understand Renee’s response. Yes. Yes. Yes.

Hope all is good for you.

Best of thoughts.
